Overseas Doctors qualifying requirements

In most cases, an Overseas Trained Doctor looking to work in Australia is required to meet the basic requirements listed below:

  1. English language proficiency requirements, GP's must pass both the MCQ and clinical exam of the AMC.  
  2. Hospital Doctors (non-specialists) must meet the specific registration requirements of the Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  3. Specialists must apply to the relevant Specialist Medical College for recognition as a specialist through the AMC. 
  4. Immigration, apply for a appropriate visa .  
  5. Identify an appropriate job. “normally AoN” (Area of Need position).  
  6. Apply via (AHPRA) medical registration.  
  7. Obtain medical indemnity cover in Australia.

Doctors and nurse practitioners who wish to practise in Australia must first register with the Medical Board of the State or Territory they intend to practice.

After the Australian visa is granted and doctors must apply to Medicare Australia for a Medical Provider number if they are to work in general practise and prescribing drugs.
